Oct 5, 2010 was a big day for us. at 1:15 pm eastern time the 40 millionth powerhead produced at our Virginia Beach manufacturing facility rolled off the line.  Fittingly enough the unit was a MS 290 STIHL Farm Boss, our top selling chain saw.  Our president Fred Whyte accepted the unit from Executive Vice President of Operations Peter Mueller in front of a gathering of STIHL employees.

"This unit is symbolic of years of hard work and dedication by all of our STIHL employees, from the men and women in product assembly and manufacturing to our territory managers across the country,” said Whyte. “We are the number one selling brand of gasoline-powered handheld outdoor equipment in the country for a reason, and today I salute each and every person responsible for this success.”

To make the occasion even more special, Hans Peter Stihl, the son of STIHL's founder Andreas Stihl, and Chairman chairman of the advisory board of STIHL HOLDING AG & Co. KG , joined the celebration.  He was in town for his annual visit to our facility and seemed very pleased with the milestone.  He told our group that the company is on track for record sales this year, both nationally and worldwide.

The 40 millionth unit was not the only thing we celebrated today.  Earlier this year we announced that independent research had shown that STIHL was the No. 1 selling brand of gasoline handheld outdoor power equipment in the United States.  To celebrate that news, all employees in the plant were given a free afternoon to attend a party in our main parking lot with beer, bratwurst, and pretzels.   There Mr. Whyte also announced that STIHL's HSA 65 cordless hedge trimmer was receiving the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award that evening in New York City.

We have seen a lot of changes here at our headquarters in Virginia Beach, Va.  We started STIHL's US operations in 1974  with 50 employees and manufacturing a single model of chain saw. Since then, production has grown and we now employ more than 2,000 people nationwide, 1,800 in Virginia Beach, and produce a full line of high-quality, handheld outdoor power equipment including blowers, trimmers, brushcutters, and multi-task tools, as well as the number one selling brand of chain saws worldwide. In addition to serving the U.S. market, STIHL Inc. exports to over 90 countries.
